A wonderfully evocative piece of 19th-century American folk art, this early painted wooden prayer kneeler or low pew bench retains its original dark red-brown surface and wonderfully worn patina.
Hand-painted across the top is “PEW. No 2.”, while the underside bears the pencil inscription “John Wechman / Seat No. 11.” Simple bootjack-form legs and traditional nail construction speak to its utilitarian origins and handmade character.
Dating to the mid-19th century, the surviving inscriptions and beautifully aged original surface give this small piece tremendous personality. An especially appealing addition to a collection of Americana and folk art.
